Her Story Theater Performance Tells Beautiful Stories of the Women of DP
In November, Her Story Theater, in partnership with Working Women’s History Project, presented GLOSS OVER – a premiere performance based on stories told by participants of Deborah’s Place. Over 350 guests attended three performances over the weekend of November 5 and helped raise over $5,000 for Deborah’s Place!
Gloss Over is a multi-media theater piece that tells the stories of women who are homeless and formerly homeless. The performance was set in and takes place at a beauty salon – Salon Echo in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. Each actor represented one or a composite of several Deborah’s Place participants and the monologues were based on interviews with these women. Deborah’s Place interviewees, participants and staff were invited to attend the event and all agreed that it was a moving performance that beautifully captured the likeness and hardships faced by the women who were interviewed.
Her Story Theater is a newly formed branch of Working Women’s History Project. It is a professional theater group that develops original performances based on the lives of contemporary women struggling with social and cultural injustice. All of the writers, actors, artists and planners of the theater group volunteer their time to help raise awareness and support through writing and performance.
We are so grateful to Mary Bonnett, Artistic Director, and everyone involved in the performance for allowing Deborah’s Place to be part of this one-of-a-kind opportunity. Thank you as well to the women of Deborah’s Place who courageously shared their stories and photographs.
