2013 Benefit Dinner Exceeds Fundraising Goal

Thank you to all who joined us at the Deborah’s Place Benefit Dinner on Thursday, May 16, 2013.  Thanks to the generous support of our attendees, donors and sponsors we exceeded our goal of $25,000 in contributions for the event to raise over $33,000! Guests enjoyed a wonderful meal from the Entertaining Company at the Chicago Cultural Center.  The program included inspirational words from guest speaker K. Sujata, President of the Chicago Foundation for Women, about the physical trauma many women face that lead to their homeless experience.  St. Chrysostom’s Episcopal Church was presented with the Patty Crowley Service Award for their 17 years of dedicated meal service at Deborah’s Place.  The event also included a video presentation of Bethany’s Story. Join Feast Restaurant on Wednesday, November 14 for their monthly wine tasting.  This month’s tasting will benefit Deborah’s Place. Admission is $20 and all proceeds will be donated to Deborah’s Place.  In addition to donations, Feast will also be accepting canned goods and nonperishable food items in lieu of cash donation.  The tasting is from 7pm – 9pm at Feast Restaurant + Bar 1616 North Damen.

Guests enjoyed a wonderful meal at Fulton’s on the River while enjoying a program that included performances from Her Story Theater’s production of “Gloss Over” based on stories of Deborah’s Place participants.  The night also premiered a short film documentary featuring Deborah’s Place participant, Pauline King produced by Lauren Major of Major Multimedia and a group of students from DePaul University.  These performances highlight the individual stories of the women we serve. Join Deborah’s Place on June 23rd as part of the 27th Annual Greater Chicago Food Depository Hunger Walk.  For every person who volunteers on our behalf, we get $12 off our food bill! Here’s what you need to do to help out: 1. Go the Greater Chicago Food Depository Hunger Walk Page and get your registration form. 2. Add the Deborah’s Place agency code – A00190 to the top of the form and complete the rest. 3. Bring your completed registration to Soldier Field on June 23rd.  Registration is from 7 – 9:30 am. Our earnings will be based only on forms received by 9:30 am. 4. Walk the 5K – bask in the glory of completing a good walk on the lakefront and raising money for Deborah’s Place 5.  You are invited to stay and enjoy the day at the lakefront....

4th Annual Chili Cook-Off Raises Over $4,000!

On Saturday, January 28, eighty-five adults and children gathered in the Deborah’s Place gym in East Garfield Park to enjoy an afternoon of great food and friends and raise money for the women and work of Deborah’s Place. Guests enjoyed the sweet sounds of Bluegrass duo “Long Journey Home” while they tasted through the 19 different chili entries.  Each batch of chili had its own twist with ingredients as varied as espresso, chocolate and pumpkin and more traditional favorites like chicken, beef and a variety of beans and spices.  Those voted the best walked away with culinary-themed prizes.  Congratulations to the 4th Annual Chili Cook-Off Winners! On June 17, 2011, hundreds of donors, volunteers, board members and participants joined together for a memorable evening at the Chicago Cultural Center for Deborah’s Place 2011 Annual Gala, “Opening Doors for Women in Chicago.” Over 250 individuals and corporate sponsors donated and raised over $120,000 which will be used to provide life-changing supportive services, and safe, stable homes to the 400+ women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and served by Deborah’s Place. The PAB Pub Party was Enjoyed by All! Over 75 guests gathered on the evening of March 3, 2011 at the Professional Auxiliary Board’s “Under One Roof” Pub Party. Held at Goose Island Brewery in Chicago, the annual event provided a chance for Deborah’s Place supporters to network and enjoy local food and beverages, while raising over $11,000 for the women and work of Deborah’s Place. Guests enjoyed wine, soft drinks, and local Goose Island beer on tap The food buffet was delicious! The exciting silent auction and raffle brought in more than $4000 for Deborah’s Place. Supporters Gather to Celebrate the New Safe Haven Kitchen!

On September 26, the Deborah’s Place Advisory Council hosted a Kitchen Shower to celebrate the new renovations to the kitchen at Dolores’ Safe Haven. More than 30 long time volunteers, former staff, and other supporters gathered to view and celebrate the new kitchen, while enjoying fruit, cookies, and cake. The kitchen received major renovations during the past few weeks, including new shelving, stainless steel countertops, and improved head room. Members of the Advisory Council– the hosts for the celebration– gather in front of the newly renovated kitchen. The staff and women of the Dolores’ Safe Haven received many gifts at the Shower– new utensils, appliances, towels, and other supplies for the new kitchen. Love Your Genes Day Event a Success!

On Thursday, August 13th, the Shops at North Bridge held their highly-anticipated “Love Your Genes” denim event. Shoppers donated a pair of new or gently used jeans to the women of Deborah’s Place in exchange for discounts for new denim or other items at the Shops. Hundreds of shoppers attended the event, which featured a fashion show with advice on what type of jeans look best on different body types. Staff and tenants of Deborah’s Place also attended. Here, LaShon, one of the Deborah’s Place Divas, speaks to the crowd about Deborah’s Place. Shoppers attached notes of encouragement to the jeans. On Friday, May 29th, 2009, Deborah’s Place held its 15th Annual Gala Celebration to raise funds to “Open Doors for Women in Chicago.” Over 250 friends and supporters gathered together in the International Ballroom at the Fairmont Hotel Chicago to help break the cycle of homelessness for women in Chicago. The memorable evening featured musical entertainment from Stephanie Browning and the JP5, an exciting live and silent auction, dinner and dancing. Click here to let us know what you thought of the Bead Bash! Over 100 guests partied the night away at the 7th Annual Deborah’s Place Mardi Gras Bead Bash on February 24th, 2009. Hosted by the Deborah’s Place Professional Auxiliary Board (PAB), the Bead Bash helped raise funds for the women of Deborah’s Place and end the cycle of homelessness for the women of Chicago.
