Make a Difference at Deborah’s Place

The opportunities to volunteer at Deborah’s place are nearly limitless. We have ongoing needs for volunteer support, and we also welcome new ideas for activities that draw on the talents of our many volunteers. On your first day and beyond, we provide staff support and oversight throughout your volunteer experience.

One volunteer per month is needed to take bags of shredded paper and boxes to WomanCraft, Inc. at 4115 W Ogden (just south of Cermak). This opportunity requires a car, and takes about 1 hour.

Dedicated, punctual volunteers with a medical background are needed to help at our bimonthly health clinics. This opportunity involves a commitment of 3-4 hours each session, at both clinic dates each month. Volunteers will help screen participants, answer questions if qualified, help participants fill out paperwork, and sit with the participants while they wait to be seen. Clinics are held during business hours, twice each month.

Individuals may donate pro bono medical, dental, or legal services.

Individual volunteers can help in our administrative offices, with tasks such as filing, stuffing envelopes, shredding, or other similar tasks.

Individual volunteers are needed in the Learning Center for activities such as:
*Teaching arts and crafts – like ceramics, jewelry making, sewing, or paper- and candle-making
*Playing board games with the women
*Leading a workshop for the women on an area of your expertise (career exploration, legal matters, creative writing, etc.)
*Tutoring (limited opportunities available, based on participant needs)

Many volunteers enjoy bringing and setting up lunch or dinner for our women. Our women love when volunteers bring a meal that they have prepared or purchased and serve it for them.

Individual volunteers also may help run after-dinner (or after-lunch) social activities. Our ladies love bingo nights, movie nights, playing board games, etc. This opportunity has plenty of room for creativity, which we encourage! Maybe you would like to bring some popcorn or snacks and teach a card game? Maybe you’d like to do some kind of holiday craft activity (egg dying? Easter basket decoration?), stage some dramatic readings, or teach a dance step? The possibilities are endless!

Dolores’ Safe Haven

Individual volunteers are needed to help serve lunch and dinner each day to the residents of the Safe Haven. Because of the nature of the Safe Haven population, volunteers are required to attend an orientation before serving at this location. These orientations are held monthly, in the evenings, and last no longer than two hours.

Teresa’s Interim Housing Program

One person each month can help clean the Teresa’s common spaces. This needs to be between 10am and 5pm, Monday through Friday when the residents are not in the building (the space is quite small). This project takes about 2 hours.

Non-program Opportunities

Volunteers are needed to offer their professional services to staff. This could be workshops on law, medical issues, medications, website development, stress management, etc.

Individuals are welcomed to join the Deborah’s Place Professional Auxiliary Board (PAB). PAB members volunteer at the Deborah’s Place sites, participate in fundraising and network with others who share similar interests. The board meets every other month, and board members are asked to serve on a commission that meets monthly, volunteer once a quarter, and participate in fundraising for Deborah’s Place.

Volunteers are needed for Third-Party Fundraisers and Donation Drives for Deborah’s Place. Third Party Fundraisers are any event that you plan, host, and stage in support of Deborah’s Place programs. Do you love to plan a party, or bring people together for a good cause? Consider raising funds or soliciting in-kind support or donations from others – either on your own or with a group of friends. To learn more, read our Guide to Third Party Fundraising. For more information about hosting your Third-Party Fundraiser, contact Elizabeth Golden.
