Single Day Volunteer Opportunities

Our single day volunteer opportunities are generally available Monday through Friday between 9 am and 5 pm. Some Saturday hours are occasionally available: contact us to plan your volunteer shift. To ensure a successful volunteer event, please contact us at least one month in advance.

Landscaping and Cleaning

Groups of up to 25 people are welcome at any of our three locations to maintain and beautify our spaces. Your tasks might include:

  • Cleaning indoors: windows, chair rails, bathrooms, common areas
  • Landscaping outside: picking up garbage around the premises or pulling weeds in the warmer months.

We ask that groups bring gardening or latex gloves, trash bags, rags, and cleaning supplies such as Windex and all-purpose cleaners. Plan for a 3-4 hour shift.

Bingo Games

You bring the prizes, we’ll bring the bingo cards! Groups of 5 to 20 people can assist with bingo, depending on the location. You can choose to bring a meal and serve lunch or dinner along with the bingo activity. We ask that you bring enough bingo prizes for each participant to win at least one. Prizes can be simple and affordable items with a cash value under $10, such as:

  • Cleaning supplies
  • Twin size sheets and blankets
  • Picture frames
  • Craft supplies
  • Personal care products, especially African-American haircare products

Plan to spend about 2 hours leading the bingo game with your group.

Learning Center Activities

Volunteers can lead activities in any of our three Learning Centers. Bring your creative ideas! Some topics might include:

      • Budgeting
      • Resume writing or other job search topics
      • Arts and crafts
      • Building self-esteem

Plan to spend 1-2 hours leading your activity. Learning Center volunteers must be 18 or older.

Administrative Support

Staff at our 2822 W Jackson location need occasional support with office tasks, such as:

      • Filing
      • Shredding
      • Data entry
      • Preparing mailings
      • Sorting supplies

These opportunities generally last 2-4 hours.

Offsite Events and Donation Drives

Host Your Own Fundraiser

Indulge your creativity and support Deborah’s Place by hosting a community fundraising event. Plan and host your own event and donate the proceeds to Deborah’s Place. Let us know what you’re planning, and we’ll provide informational materials you can use. We’ll also thank you on our social media channels to help you promote your event!

Hold a Donation Drive

Donation drives provide much-needed items for our women. Take a look at our current wish list for a guide on what to collect. Toiletries, cleaning supplies, and nonperishable food are always in need. Unfortunately, we cannot accept donations of clothing.

Support Us at the Food Depository

When you volunteer at Greater Chicago Food Depository, you can also help Deborah’s Place provide meals for our residents. Every volunteer hour on behalf of Deborah’s Place earns $5 off our food bill. When you sign up to volunteer, include our agency ID (A00190) and help two organizations at once!
